Complete on the Corner Sessions Box
Spin (p.124) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "Miles smeared electronic horns, guitars, and sitars over heavy funk..." JazzTimes (p.67) - "Its otherworldly funk, somehow both hypnotic and clangorous, set the precedent for a whole subspecies of DJ culture."----------------------------------------------------- 5 stars out of five and essential listening, especially for those who dismissed these sessions back in the day. It's an amazing looking box set-an exquisite design, for those seeking the ultimate in tangible collecting. The "On the Corner Sessions" was Miles completely turning his back on the bebop oriented jazz he perfected. Here, its all swirling, intense rhythms and funk accents-Mile's trumpet work just another color splash and rhytmic voice. Interesting that both Miles and Coltrane, who together personified and perfected modern jazz, both left traditional melody and chord structure in the dust on their seperate journeys to an avante garde destination.Coltrane blurred the distinction between horn and voice and eschewed western rhythms in his search for the ultimate spiritual and musical truth. Miles on the other hand, while also turning his back on traditional jazz constructs, followed a hip urban path to "On the Corner", his avante radical version of pop music. One of our more learned customers commented that Coltrane was the music personified through his saxophone-the epicenter, while Miles, retreated on trumpet, seemingly more of a spectator, or driver of the bus, so to speak-thoughI think "bandleader" vs. trumpeter is probably more apt. Which may explain why Coltrane is so revered today as a master musician-Miles on the other hand has had a more profound impact on the contemporay music scene-"On the Corner" inspired a whole generation of contemporary rock/funk/jazz artists and I think, the DJ scene, blurring genre restrictions. Of course, it's not appropriate to pit artists against another. Both Coltrane and Miles were and remain giants, rewarding constant listening and re-listening. The "Complete On The Corner Session" is essential listening-get to it. SB------------------------------------------------------ 1. On The Corner - (Unedited Master) 2. On The Corner - (Take 4) 3.
